Syed Akbaruddin bows out of the UN with a Namaste

April 30: Syed Akbaruddin, India’s Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the United Nations completed his term with the United Nations and in his last video discussion with the Secretary-General of United Nations Mr. António Guterres, He said “Before I leave Secretary-General, I have one last request which is in the India tradition when we leave or when we meet we don’t say hello or shake hands but we say namaste. So before i end I want to say namaste to you”

Akbaruddin is a 1985 batch Indian Foreign Service officer. In his distinguished career spanning over 34 years, Akbaruddin has served both in India and abroad in multiple capacities. An expert of West Asia Issues, he has served in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. He was also at the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna. He took charge as India’s Ambassador & Permanent Representative to the United Nations in Nov 2015 and served until his retirement

Syed Akbaruddin will be replaced by Shri T. S. Tirumurti, a 1985 batch Indian Foreign Service officer presently Secretary in the Ministry. He will be taking charge very soon.
